Happy International
Women’s Day.
We’re marking this year’s celebration by sharing the voices of some of our women leaders. Read on to find out their thoughts on IWD, some women who inspire them, and their advice for women entering our industry.
Joni Williams
President, Partner
Who is a woman who inspires you?
My sister, Debbie. She gives out so much love and yet always has more to share. She is a ferociously caring mother, is still in love with her husband of over 30 years, and still has the same passion for her students and for teaching that she had her very first day. When life gets tough—and it has—she never, ever loses her faith or her ability and willingness to love and to give.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
My mom and dad raised me to believe I could be and do anything. My mom went back to college to help me and my sisters to go college too. Now I work in an industry, and at a company, where my gender has never held me back. My two partners, Jon and David, have never seen me as anything other than their equal, and I am surrounded by so many amazing and talented women here.
All of my life I’ve been surrounded by strong women and have had some great role models. Today reminds me how blessed I am, and also reminds me that my experience is not every woman’s experience. This day makes me remember to give back, mentor more, and find ways to lift up and encourage other women.
What piece of advice would you give women entering our industry?
Don’t let your background or your perceived limitations define you. Try new things and explore. Don’t be afraid to mess up (you will) or start over. There are a lot of people who will help you—if you ask. AND: don’t be invisible!

Who is a woman who inspires you?
As I think about my career in advertising, one woman comes to mind immediately. Marla Kaplowitz. Marla is now the President and CEO of the 4As organization but she is also my mentor and my friend. She took a chance on a small town girl with limited media training and understanding. She saw my thirst for knowledge and learning as well as my potential. She taught me the basics and helped me develop a wonderful career in NYC. She has had an amazing career and continues to inspire and encourage others along the way. I am grateful to know her.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It’s interesting. I wish we didn’t need to have an International Women’s Day. Men’s and women’s achievements and contributions should be celebrated every day. And every PERSON should be seen for their character, skills and contributions versus their gender. I believe we are fortunate in the media business to have so many women in leadership positions, like our own Joni Williams, and I am grateful that I have never experienced any strong gender prejudice in my career. But I do understand it is very different in other careers and other countries. I hope this day sheds light on some of these inequalities and contributes to change for the future.
What piece of advice would you give women entering our industry?
Be yourself. Bring your ideas, your passion and your whole self to work. It’s an exciting industry but also one that can wear you down. Don’t forget to have fun, take time for yourself and don’t apologize for prioritizing your family.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
IWD is a day to appreciate the strength and resilience of the women in my life as well as those that are kicking ass to fragment societal norms. It’s a trigger to borrow and lend power, to supercharge, and to ask yourself what more can I do?
What piece of advice would you give women entering our industry?
It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture when you’re wading in the details. Brands are platforms for change and what we choose to do with those platforms matters. Seize any opportunity to align what you do with your values.
